“Today’s May Revision to the budget makes clear that a significant budget problem remains. We will continue to work with the Governor and the Senate to close the remaining budget problem; which will require the Legislature making tough cuts and the voters approving temporary revenues. To date, the Assembly has held over 60 budget hearings, and we will immediately begin hearing the May Revision proposal. Through an open and transparent process, we will craft an on-time, balanced budget by June 15.”

Through its study, the Commission will examine how the state is addressing the changing needs of California’s
veteran population and how agencies and organizations are providing services and linking
veterans with the federal compensation, benefits and programs to which they are entitled.
At this hearing, the Commission will further examine the roles and functions of the
California Department of Veterans Affairs, the operation of the eight state-run veterans
homes, and the role that Veterans Service Organizations and county veterans service
officers play in connecting veterans with their services.

The Little Hoover Commission is examining California’s use of commercial bail and pretrial diversion services at county jails as part of the Commission’s ongoing look at public safety realignment initiated in 2011. The combination of large pre-trial populations and new offenders  who previously would have been sent to state prison is creating population management  challenges for counties.
